Abstract

Observations of an exploratory study are presented in this paper on the energy dissipation characteristics of particles sloshing in a cylindrical container. The objective is to take advantage of the desirable dissipation characteristics of particulate flow for control of excessive structural oscillations. Hence, the proposed configuration bears similarities to tuned vibration absorbers and liquid sloshing absorbers. Furthermore, comparisons to impact dampers which use granular or powdered material as an impact agent are made.
