Abstract
In this article I seek to establish two things: that the free-market public policy framework dominant within Australian government since the mid-1970s has had a negative impact on Australian culture generally and literature in particular, and that part of the reason for the continuing dominance of this policy framework is a pervasive, universalist approach to cultural analysis.
