Blood gas analysis is an important part of a doctor’s diagnosis; it primarily consists of the partial pressure of oxygen, partial pressure of carbon dioxide and the pH. It provides the medical practitioners with insight into the patient’s respiratory health, the metabolic activity in the body and the health of the renal system. The emphasis of the thesis is based on the development of the colorimetric technique to measure the pH and pCO2 and the design and implementation of the colorimetric algorithm in hardware. The colorimetric algorithm is implemented using floating point arithmetic architectures for high accuracy with an emphasis on low power consumption and area.
