Student athletes in the 1990s face more pressure than those of earlier decades to perform well athletically, academically, and socially. Greater rewards as well as greater punishments make extraordinary demands of individual players. Placing so much pressure on people from 13 to 22 years old ofter causes performance and emotional difficulties. Such problems concern not only student athletes but also their teammates, coaches, physicians, trainers, instructors, advisers, friends, and family members.
