Elements Author's keywords. 30 minutes. From VU Elements: Noise is a symphony of the spoken word. It is a performance piece with a cast of 10 actors, that embodies the confusion of the internet during the first year of COVID. The research question was: how do we make sense of the Noise of the internet? As Victorians entered lockdown, the world around us was silenced. However, the noise of the internet grew louder and louder. This piece explores the isolation of lockdown, coupled with the confusion of the internet, connecting stories of Black Lives Matter, Indigenous deaths in custody, Land rites, colonization, rioting in the US, the increase in the number of animal companions, the developing of neighbourhood focus, the Spanish flu of 1919 and the call for Justice as the end result of making meaning. It is written as two poems – one which is my original work, and the other which is found poetry taken from text and interviews on over 80 websites. These two poems are interwoven – at times spoken in unison and at times spoken in conflict. Ten actors adopt a range of roles to bring tonal texture and intonational range to the piece. Movement is carefully choreographed to create meaning from conflicting ideas. Noise was performed three times at La Mama courthouse theatre, Carlton, to a total audience of about 150. The conception, writing, direction and set design were created by me.
