In this paper I explore some of the challenges of teaching Indigenous issues to non-
Indigenous students. I speak as an Indigenous person and focus on the notion of
discomfort. I suggest that the discomfort largely stems from a lack of knowledge about the
history race relations, misrepresentation of Indigenous peoples, and ongoing exclusion. I
suggest that students must be introduced to Australian history from an Indigenous
perspective and that sovereignty should be central to this foundation.
