The goal of this research project is to investigate the value of using screen capture techniquesto mark and provide feedback on student assignments and to identify opportunities and problems that arise from using this technique. In particular it was to look at whether providing student feedback in this way offered significant advantages over more conventional approaches. The project is using an action-research approach in which a new approach to the provision of student feedback is devised and tested, and improved after considering its success. Initial results and discussions with students suggest that the use of screen capture to mark and provide feedback to students in this way appears to offer an effective approach to formative assessment, but not one that should entirely replacecurrent methods. This approach, however, certainly does not provide a ‘cheap and easy’ method of providing feedback.
