Abstract
In commercial terms, poetry is a form irredeemably condemned to the literary margins. However, this paper makes a case for its ongoing significance by reading it into contemporary public language. It identifies the rhetorical power of former Prime Minister John Howard with his unacknowledged mastery of poetic techniques that we can observe in formulaic-performative traditions of poetry such as the oral epic.
