Abstract
This paper seeks to conceptualise an innovative framework to assist organisations in the development of flexible and appropriate structures and strategies for the management of volunteer and paid workforces. Given that theory based contributions to this research area are limited, and the activity of formal volunteering requires a high degree of adaptability, the tenets of flexibility theory have been selected to underpin this model. A brief overview of the major models using flexibility theory is provided and reference is made to the additional elements posited as shaping flexible work practices in organisations. These elements include structure, strategy, culture, human resource management (HRJVI) and worker commitment. The model advocates a partnership approach to aligning flexibility practices, the benefits of which include enhanced performance outcomes and the development and maintenance of supportive relations between paid and unpaid workers.
