Abstract

The annotated draft typescript contains commentary and explanatory notes on "Declaration of the Rights of the Child" adopted by the Social Commission of the United Nations in April 1950, and various children related topics, such as children’s clubs (Sunday Schools, boy scouts, girl guides, community centres, Youth Centres, Young Farmer's Clubs, Junior Eureka League), Youth Lead Activities (drawing from the experiences of the Junior Eureka League it is possible to learn from the past and build a children’s organisation which is lead by young people based on the project method of work giving children a sense of membership in their own independent organisation), the adult protection (highlighting the roles of the labour movement, women’s movement, parents auxiliaries and advisory committees), and the task of studying. The "Two Tasks in Defence of Children" chapter debates on the future of Australia and what it would be like when our own children are grown up, questioning the provision of basic human needs in future such as food, clothing, shelter and education. In the 122 pages that are provided, Ruth discusses children of the 10 – 16 age group and problems peculiar to them if they are to be understood well enough to be offered effective guidance for their development.
