Abstract

Contains two draft versions of the Faculty of Arts valedictory lecture delivered by John David McLaren BA Hons BEd PhD Melb MA Monash (1932-) in 1997 at the Victoria University. In the lecture McLaren discusses the history of European and Asian settlement in Australia, characterised by harshness and disappointment from the viewpoint of Aborigines whose treatment has only been recognised recently. McLaren further discusses the Australian literary history and writing that reflects the Australian settlement, promises it fulfils and images of the Australian identity. Also included is the O.C.A Dinner Address on 19 September 1997 prepared by Rufus Black, Chaplain of Ormond College.
