Abstract

The 'Teaching and learning scoping study' set out to identify key issues and themes that vocational education and training (VET) practitioners identify as challenging in translating training packages into teaching, learning and assessment strategies. Its aims were to: collect information from as many practitioners delivering as wide a range of training packages as possible; facilitate practitioners' identification of support materials, styles and media needed to assist their implementation of training packages; identify and synthesise the key issues suggested by practitioners and others in relation to translating training packages into teaching and learning strategies; and suggest ways in which the project findings can be used to inform the future development of resources to support teaching and learning in the Australian VET sector. The study found that 'VET practitioners are delivering in a range of contexts, using broad ranging strategies and various tools and technology to meet the needs of diverse learners'. Evidence suggests that the level of effective and innovative teaching and learning taking place is considerable. However, there is also evidence of gaps in the skills and knowledge of many practitioners when working in the training package environment, especially in translating competency standards into learning experiences, fulfilling the needs of diverse groups of learners and relationships with industry and peers. Based on the findings of this study, recommendations are made in terms of: the areas for resource development; preferred forms and formats of resources; and mechanisms for supporting enhanced teaching and learning practice. The contents of this report are: Executive summary; Introduction; Research and resources on VET teaching and learning; Doing it well; Doing it better; Supporting improved practice; Conclusions; Recommendations. Included as appendices are: Questionnaire; Statistical analysis; Informants to the project.
