Abstract

Research provides a significant part of social work practice especially research that enhances the theory and practice link and its connections to the educational project. Research is also recognised by the professional associations as an essential element in social work’s range of skills and abilities that are required for professional practice. While social work academics consider research to be a significant part of their work, practice-based research is not as readily embraced by practitioners. This article reports on a new initiative in post-graduate social work programmes that links workplace leaning with professional awards at Master and Doctorate levels. The new awards introduced at Victoria University’s Social Work programme2 in 2007 build on the new emphasis on organisations as sites for learning and as new sites for practitioner-based research and links this development with post-graduate programs in a new partnership between the worker, the organisation and academe.
