Abstract

This paper examines the role of citizens in local government decision making within modern governance frameworks for local government. Whilst community engagement initiatives that allow citizen participation in government decision making are part of a growing rhetoric of public sector management and evidenced by action in many countries, there is a need for further comparative international research to examine the themes and variations in engagement initiatives, and to determine the extent to which ideas and practices about community engagement can travel and be translated into different national and institutional contexts - and which factors influence the trajectory of change.
