Abstract

More and more companies are seeking to involve their customers more closely in the design of innovative new products and, increasingly, this is happening through the use of open, online forums. In this study, a preliminary analysis of one of the more popular online innovation forums (Dell’s ‘IdeaStorm’) is undertaken in an attempt to identify conditions that might lead to success of failure (in terms of new ideas). Use is made of formal ‘Social Network Analysis’ (SNA) techniques, with a focus on network structure, power and influence, subgroups and roles.
