Abstract
This paper considers the practice of school suspension and exclusion as outlined in Queensland's Education (General Provisions) Act 1989. Of concern are the possible effects the text's discursive strategies promote in both decision-making processes of principals and the relationships enacted. The author discusses four prominent discourses: moral/behaviour; scientific/legalistic; developmental/ageist; and individualist. The paper underscores the ongoing need for principals to engage in purposeful reflexivity in their dialogic relationships - in this case, those actively constructed between students, school principals and the legislation guiding their contact.
