Abstract
This report discusses findings from an analysis of qualitative interviews with 134 students commencing in HE and VE courses at VU in 2007. It also draws on some of the local and international student transitions and student decision-making literatures. The study sought to identify the key factors that impacted on student decision-making about: applying for a place in tertiary course; choosing Victoria University; enrolling with a full-time or part-time study load; choice of course and change of course; official and unofficial withdrawal; and RPL and academic credit. It also sought feedback on the support needs and wants of commencing students and on how well VU is currently meeting these needs. It is intended to inform initiatives developed under Making VU Commitment 3, which aims to provide more customised learning experiences for students. Suggestions for both some general and more targeted support for new students are offered in the final part of the report.
