Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) and innovations built on LLMs have the potential to transform the development of conversation assistants (CA) in the higher education sector. A case study from Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia is presented in this paper, exploring the practical detail associated with implementing LLM technology. LLM technology enables cross-disciplinary collaboration and fast development cycles. When working with LLM there needs to design for user support and iterative testing to manage unpredictable technology. A focus on the "onboarding" and "offboarding" of the CA in the design process is highlighted as one crucial aspect contributing to a positive learning experience. The paper concludes by emphasising the need for ongoing research into the impact of AI powered tools on teaching and learning, emphasising the enhancement of human interaction and support rather than replacement.
