Abstract

The paper identifies and assesses park management systems, themes and best practice required towards developing a methodology and framework for an integrated park management model. Six main themes were examined: Park Management (classification, management models); Staff; Funding; Tourism and Visitor Management; Asset Management and Marketing and Distribution. Further research is still being conducted towards developing the model - which is a limitation to the work. Findings were reached that planning must embrace economic, social, political, ecological and technical conditions, and intended use based on rigorous scientific research. Skills are still debated as to whether a scientific or ecological base is more important than broader management skills. Park funds are generated from innovative activities. Data on visitor numbers is collected however there is an absence of visitor impact data. The lack of knowledge of the condition of natural and cultural heritage assets is common and a strategy to move away from product marketing to social marketing is occurring.
