Abstract
SWIRL (Story Writing in Remote Locations) is a literacy re-engagement program initiated by Lawry Mahon which has been running in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. It involves pre-service teachers at Victoria University undertaking a placement in these remote communities and working with children to support them writing their own stories. The film focuses on the experiences of 2016 SWIRL participants, and Lawry's 20th year running the program. It is hoped that the film will be a useful resource to promote dialogue around how teachers and educators can best understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, as well as consider strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (AITSL standards 2.4 & 1.4 respectively)
